Please explain?

10:42 pm Mon, 18th July 2005

There are some things I just don’t understand. Not sure if I ever will.

  • Smoking (and why oh why does someone need to smoke in a restaurant.. please London, catch up with Australia and BAN smoking in restaurants. How can one possibly smoke WHILST they are eating?!)
  • Social binge drinking (I mean why do that to yourself? What sort of pleasure can anyone get from drinking until they throw up? Why do people need alcohol anyway? Can’t they just be happy with who they are? Can’t they relate to other people without the need for external substances to help “relax” them.)
  • Bitching and backstabbing. Just human nature in general really. Nuff said.

Hrmmm…

I will stop
I will stop at nothing
Say the right things
When electioneering
I trust I can rely on your vote

When I go forwards you go backwards and somewhere we will meet

Gone

Thinking about these things makes me wonder… about life… people… society.. the culture of western society in particular. London on the one side can seem like such a vibrant place… full of life and diversity. But on the darker side of the coin, it is a place filled with materialism, greed, and the insatiable and never-ending search for happiness and pleasure. Hrmm.

She told him she’d rather fix her makeup
Than try to fix what’s going on
But the problem keeps on calling
Even with the cellphone gone
She told him that she believes in living
Bigger than she’s living now
But her world keeps spinning backwards
And upside down
Don’t say so long, and throw yourself wrong
Don’t spend today away
Cuz today will soon be

Gone, like yesterday is gone,
Like history is gone
Just try to prove me wrong
And pretend like you’re immortal

She said, he said live like no tomorrow
Every day we borrow
Brings us one step closer to the edge.. infinity
Where’s your treasure, where’s your hope
If you get the world and lose your soul
She pretends like she pretends like she’s immortal
Don’t say so long, you’re not that far gone
This could be your big chance to makeup
Today will soon be

Gone, like yeterday is gone
Like history is gone
The world keeps spinning on
Your going going gone
Like summer break is gone
Like saturday is gone
Just try to prove me wrong
You pretend like your immortal, your immortal

We are not infinite
We are not permanent
Nothing’s immediate
We’re so confident
In our accomplishments
Look at our decadence

Gone, like Frank Sinatra
Like Elvis and his mom
Like Al Pacino’s cash
Nothing lasts in this life
My high school dreams are gone
My childhood sweets are gone
Life is a day that doesn’t last for long

Life is more than money
Time was never money
Time was never cash
Life is still more than girls
Life is more than hundred dollar bills
And roto-tom fills
Life’s more than fame and rock and roll and thrills
All the riches of the kings end up in wills
We got information in the information age
But do we know what life is
Outside of our convenient Lexus cages

She said he said live like no tomorrow
Every moment that we borrow
Brings us closer to the God who’s not short of cash
Hey Bono I’m glad you asked
Life is still worth living, life is still worth living…

Have I, too, become caught in that cage…?

alcohol (well beer) tastes good. Drinking in moderation is good and sensible, to excess I don’t really understand, you feel sick while doing it anyhow…

London sounds just like Sydney…vibrant, full of life etc… but also materialistic, greedy…you’re not missing out on much 😉

I think beer tastes absolutely disgusting… but that might be just me. Those cocktails I had the other night tasted pretty good though. But yeh drinking till u feel sick.. I totally don’t get that.

Hm. London is like Sydney times by 5. It is Sydney on a much larger, much busier, much more populated scale.. its alot more vibrant and lively.. Sydney is quiet by comparison. But its also more materialistic and greedy. Esp if u work in the banking/finance industry which seems to breed greed.

The whole worlds sounds just like that, in varying degrees. The negative things we see when it affects us or jars with our personality/upbringing, but we’re still getting sucked in to this “darker side” – wanting more, being greedy, looking for happiness and pleasure in all the wrong places.
Really like the lyrics to that Switchfoot song by the way!
